We have been successfully using 802.1q (dot1q) for almost 2 years, but I don't
believe it supports PVST. At least on the version of code on the 9 port module
.

That is correct. The 9-port GE module doesn't support ISL in any
release. ISL isn't supported on anything using the granite ASICs
(aka K1) which also includes the 4000 series. I was told this is
a limitation in the chipset.

You can get a list of what is and isn't supported on a given port
by using 'sh port capa'.
