Virtual Templates and VOIP Why ?

I am being experimenting with VOIP and QoS and to get PPP multilink running
to use a smaller fragment delay the exmaples I see seem to always use a
Virtual-Template. Why can you not simply put the ppp mutlilink commands on
the serial interface directly.

Assume that it is a single PPP link not a bundle.
