I believe this is now possible in 12.0 but no versions before
that....

Subject: HSRP over ISL Link
Is it possible to configure HSRP on a fast ethernet interface performing ISL
trunking with Catalyst switch? I would like to setup a Cisco 3600 with one
fast ethernet interface as as HSRP peer with a Cat 5500 Route Switch Module.
The purpose is to have some sort of redundancy in place in case the route
switch module fails. Without having an ethernet interface on every VLAN on
the backup router, would it be possible to setup ISL trunking between the
backup router and the switch so the router has a virtual interface in each
VLAN to take over routing functions in case the RSM fails?
Yes.. it would be far easier to have a second switch with another RSM and
setup HSRP with that. However, my client does
not want to spend the money to do so yet, and I would like to build some
redundancy into their new layer 3 switching design.
Please let me know if this is doable.
Thanks!
