Actually, Cisco does very well with their WAN switches.
ATT's core network is Cisco WAN switches. WAN CCIE, all
50 of them, are in high demand and currently can command
a salary of roughly $210,000. Remember Switch admins are
not usually the guys designing the WAN network, WAN CCIE
are.

The difficult part is finding the equipment to practice on.
You can't (usually) get it on E-Bay and most companies
don't have it in the back room. A good lab would
run you about $1-2 million list and would include multiple:
BPX, MGX, IGX, WAN Manager and 3810.
