It took me several times through it before I passed the CCIE lab. For me
as for many the first time through the lab was quite a learning
experience and I would have done well to look at it as paying the money
for experience like I would do for class.

I also took a prep class (and passed the lab the next time I took it).
I found the prep class to be very helpful and generally recommend it
to people who are working on CCIE. I took the ECP1 class from
Chesapeake (disclaimer: I work at Chesapeake so I am not an unbiased
observer). It is a five day class. There is lots of equipment and
lots of hands on time which is excellent to prepare for the lab. There
is structure to the class which you would not get if you just took the
lab as your learning experience. The class provided insight into many
topics which I would not (or could not) have done on my own.

Yes you will learn lots in the first time that you take the lab. And for
some that is enough. But I think that for many people the expense of
a prep class is money well spent.
