All the pvs are mapped across the switch to a vpi/vci pair on another
interface. Have you tried to configure an pvc with the same interface and
vpi/vci pair for both sides on the switch?

 That's the normal beahvior in ATM and also in Frame Relay, may be in all
 NBMA networks...

 I've done this in Frame Relay and it did work! May be you are having an
 split-horizon derived problem...
 I think your ping should go all the way through the ATM cloud and back
 again !!!!!
