The testing I've done with mac based EtherChannel shows it sucks. Bad
choice for either redundancy or increased throughput in comparison to
Gigabit Ethernet. (yeah, EtherChannel was all I had before GigE..) I found
high latency, low throughput, etc.

Try this link. Still not a great reference, in that it really doesn't do
much explanation, but may be enough for your purpose.
You can probably blame Cisco for this kind of customer confusion, they came
up with the bright marketing
idea of referring to a full-duplex 400 mb etherchannel as an 800mb link.
