Ben,
Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 by Doyle has an example of mutual
redistribution between EIGRP and OSPF (pg 717) that uses no route
filtering. If redistribution was being done at more than one point
then you definitely would need to filter, but apparently the rule of
split-horizon allows single point redistribution without loops.

Do you need to use distribute-lists/route-maps to prevent loops when
redistributing between two VLSM protocols? ie OSPF and EIGRP.
