Manjeet,
All aspects that I listed regarding ATM are equally important. I realize that m
akes
it difficult. Spend most of your time mastering ATM Lane. As I also mentioned,
PVC
and SVC configuration is not all that difficult and examples on the Cisco CD ar
e
adequate to get it working quickly. ATM Classical IP is not that difficult eith
er,
just remember to configure ESI and/or NSAP address to make Classical IP work. I
always prefer ESI address. To me it seems to be much more reliable.
ATM Lane is the most difficult of all ATM configuration. Check Cisco docs on
configuring LANE on c4500 or c7200. Both Router models have pretty much the sam
e ATM
LANE configurations.
Here are some pointers you want to remember about LANE and ATM in general.
1. Always configure QSAAL and ILMI on your main ATM interface configuration usi
ng
atm pvc 1 0 5 qsaal and atm pvc 2 0 16 ilmi commands. Do not configure these
commands on any sub-interface.
2. When configuring LANE, always configure LANE Configuration Server commands o
n
your main ATM interface on the Router where your Configuration database resides
. The
command is "Lane config auto-config". You may be able to configure Configuratio
n
Server address on the sub-interfaces on the Router which does not have the
Configuration database. Ofcourse, you would need to point to the correction
Configuration Server using an ATM address.
All this may be very confusing. Cisco documentation regarding this is not very
easy
either.
Be sure to thoroughly understand ATM addressing (NSAP address) and in particula
r ESI
part of the ATM Address before you proceed to configure the Router interfaces.
I don't claim to understand everything about LANE, but enough to configure it
successfully. I have struggled with ATM and I realize what everyone else is goi
ng
through. Given this, I am prepared to donate few hours to answer very specific
ATM
CONFIGURATION related questions either by this study group or in a chat or a
conference call format. Anyone want's to arrange this?
I you guys do decide to take me on this offer, I would like to make just one
request. Please make an honest attempt to read and understand the documentation
CD
before asking questions. For example, I won't answer any questions regarding AT
M
addressing since it is adequately covered in the doc's and no hardware is neede
d to
understand this topic.
Hope this helps.
