For those that want to know.

   ICMP Router Discovery Protocol (irdp)

   1. Used to find a default gateway out of a ip network.
   2. Used by routers (cisco, nortel...) and unix boxes, there is code at
cisco for running on a Sun.
   3. IRDP uses the broadcast address of the network it is on or if
   enabled a Multicast address (224.0.0.1)
   4. Cisco's version of IRDP will look into eigrp and ospf packets and
   pick a gateway from them.

   to enable

config-interface-> ip irdp <--- Turns IRDP
it on (some ios versions need -- ip irdp enable
config-interface-> ip irdp multicast <--- Multicast
address is used, not ip network broadcast address
config-interface-> ip irdp preference 255 <--- Set preference
value on an interface, highest interface wins

default is 0 (zero) number can be negative or positive
