To monitor HSRP you can "debug standby" or go to each router and type "sh
standby". It will tell you which is the active router and the address. The
real test is to unplug the standby router and check the "sh standby" status
of the other router. It should become the active router immediately.
To test it, you can configure a workstation with a default gateway of the
HSRP address. From the workstation, ping an address in your network through
the router. Next, unplug the "active" HSRP router, try the ping again. You
should still have connectivity via the new "active" router. Do you kinda get
the idea now?
Hope this helps.
