Re: Loopback use on labs

It certainly makes sense to use the router number as the loopback
address. However if summarisation is your aim you will want contiguous
addresses in each area of your network. So if your loopbacks are spread
around your network on the various routers you are unlikely to need to
summarise them all together.

One suggestion (and I am open to criticism here) is (using
10.10.0.0/24) to split your network in half and have all the networks
below 128 (ie.10.10.1.0/24 to 10.10.127.0/24) on one side of the centre
router and all the networks greater than 128 (ie. 10.10.128.0/24 to
10.10.254.0) on the other side. And then segment further on each side.
To allow full summarisation you will need to have your loopbacks fit
into this scheme, but you can still get creative with your formats. For
example make the network number for each loopback the router number with
a 0 for loopback 0 or a 1 for loopback 1. And put a 1 or 2 at the
beginning if necessary. Whatever works for you.

Cheers
Alex.

I have seen a lot of sample labs that have the router loopback as the
router
number.

ie
R1 = 192.168.1.1
R2 = 192.168.2.2
R3 = 192.168.3.3
R4 = 192.168.4.4

This helps you keep it straight in my mind what the IP address is of
the
router, kinda makes sense.

I can't think of a way to summarize other than;

1=00000001
2=00000010
3=00000011
4=00000100
240=11111000

192.168.0.0 255.255.240.0
192.168.0.0/21

Any thoughts ?

I am trying to theorize on the best way to use loopbacks in the lab.
My
goal
is to have easily identifiable addresses so I can spot them quickly in
my
routing tables and make reference to them easier for other configs
(tunnels/dlsw etc) However, I expect the need to organize them for
summarization will
be real.

Anyone have any good ideas on the best way to pick these addresses?
I'm
assuming using a completely different subnet and additional routing to
propagate its info would be unwise.
