RIP

I'm doing some work with RIP.

Suppose I have a bunch of routers running RIP, and I'm required to configure
RIP version 2 on the serial interface between two of them (and md5
authentication).

I've configured it up, but have a couple of questions on the version bit, as
it's not clear in the Cisco documentation.

My understanding of the documentation is as follows:

- By default RIP will listen to RIP v1 and v2, but only send v1
- This can be overridden on a per interface basis by using the ip rip send
version, and ip receive version commands.

I configured it up by leaving the default, and only setting the ip rip send
version 2 command on the serial interfaces. debug shows that rip v2 packets
are sent on the serial interfaces, and rip v1 packets are sent and received
on the other interfaces.

So where does the version command in rip router configuration mode come in ?
Does this change the defaults so that only v1 or v2 packets are sent and
received ?
Can it still; be overridden on a per interface basis ?
