It depends on where in the n/w your are running this backup link. If it is
at edge of n/w you are better off with default routes. However, if you are
trying to backup a link at the heart of the network it would be sensible to
run the same routing protocol as primary link.

If running OSPF,the backup interface should also belong to same area as the
primary interface for quicker convergence
