Ben,
ATM PVCs are geared toward building a small number of
static, dedicated connections. They're great for very
specific control, but you run into the N(N-1)/2 scalability
issue for full-mesh networks. In other words, you wouldn't
want to build a LAN using PVCs. LANE is a LAN-oriented
solution; notice the incredible similarity in acronyms ;)
I think (and this is just a guess) that you could be asked
to build PVCs or LANE components. For the PVC approach, you
might be told to connect two routers using VPI/VCI 0/150 on
one side and 0/220 on the other side. The PVC across the
ATM switch that maps 0/150 on port X to 0/220 on port Y
would already exist. This is very similar to Frame Relay,
where you might have a frame switch pre-configured and you
need to configure router interfaces on both sides of the
switch using different DLCI numbers for the same logical
connection.
For LANE, you should be able to configure multiple LANE
Clients (LECs), a LES/BUS, and an LECS. Any of the entities
could be configured on a router ATM interface, a LANE
module, or an LS1010 ASP. The commands are virtually the
same for any of these platforms, with the LANE module being
the most different: (1) you don't assign layer 3 addresses
on the LANE module, and (2) you need to associate a LEC with
a Catalyst VLAN.
For LANE config info, see
