Have you tried adding "async dynamic routing" to both Async interfaces?

Here are the pertinent parts. Remember that "appletalk protocol rtmp" is
the default and will not show up.

ROUTER 1

appletalk routing eigrp 250
appletalk route-redistribution

interface Async1
 ip address 171.16.16.2 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 async default routing
 async mode dedicated
 appletalk cable-range 16-16 16.2
 appletalk zone 16-zone
 ipx network CABE0016

r2#sh app int a1
Async1 is up, line protocol is up
AppleTalk port disabled, Acquiring port net information
  AppleTalk cable range is 16-16
  AppleTalk address is 16.2, Valid
  AppleTalk zone is "16-zone"
AppleTalk discarded 8086 packets due to output errors
AppleTalk address gleaning is not supported by hardware
AppleTalk route cache is disabled, port down

ROUTER 2

appletalk routing

interface Async1
 ip address 172.16.16.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 async default routing
 async mode dedicated
 appletalk cable-range 16-16 16.1
 appletalk zone 16-zone
 ipx network CABE0016

4700#sh appletalk int a1
Async1 is up, line protocol is up
AppleTalk port disabled, Acquiring port net information
  AppleTalk cable range is 16-16
  AppleTalk address is 16.1, Valid
  AppleTalk zone is "16-zone"
AppleTalk discarded 8097 packets due to output errors
AppleTalk address gleaning is not supported by hardware
AppleTalk route cache is disabled, port down
do you have your configs handy?

I'm having an issue getting AppleTalk routing to happen over an async
PPP
interface, between 2 routers. The interface always says its " acquiring
port net information" I have apple running fine every where else in the
internetwork. any ideas ?

I have Async default routing enabled and am getting IP OSPF and IPX RIP
over
the async interface just fine.
